Novak Djokovic’s quest for his 25th Grand Slam title continues after dominating Holger Rune in straight-sets to reach the quarter-finals at Wimbledon. The second seed was reportedly struggling from stomach pains but it didn’t reflect at all in the scoreline, as he took the match 6-3, 6-4, 6-2. He will now face Alex de Minaur next for a place in the final four.

Prior to the match, Djokovic had predicted ‘fireworks on court’ but the contest failed to live up to the hype as Rune couldn’t get much going his way. Djokovic controlled the match from start to finish, not allowing the 21-year-old to break his serve even once during the matchup.

Djokovic has been recovering from a right knee injury after undergoing surgery last month. There was no signs of any discomfort though as he took the court, claiming the first 12 points to take a 3-0 lead and burst the match wide open. Rune saved a breakpoint soon after but Djokovic was too strong on his service games, serving out the first set to win 6-3.

The second set brought some worried faces to Centre Court when Djokovic began to hold his stomach in pain, appearing to be in pain between points. After going down 3-2, he left the court for the change of ends and returned feeling somewhat better. He broke the Dane a few moments later to take a 4-3 lead and seize control of the set.

Despite Rune fighting to save six set points, Djokovic held to his guns and served out the set to win 6-4 and go up 2 sets.

From there things got worse for Rune. He was broken in the opening game of the third set and Djokovic could smell the blood. He broke him once more to go up 5-2 and then closed out the match to love.

After the match, Djokovic had words for the crowd who had been chanting “Rune” throughout the matchup which might have been misconstrued as boos.

“For all the people that were respectful, a good night. For all the people who tried to disrespect me…a GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD night,” Djokovic said. “I know they are cheering for Rune, but that’s just an excuse to also boo me.”

As a seven-time Wimbledon champion, Djokovic will clearly be a favourite going into the backend of the tournament and has a relatively easy road ahead of him to the finals. First, he must go through De Minaur though in the quarters who beat Djokovic earlier this year at the United Cup.

After that he could potentially be up against Taylor Fritz in the semi finals or Lorenzo Musetti from Italy. On the other side of the bracket lies three of the top five seeds in Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev. Only one of those three will make it out of the top side of the bracket.

In other fourth round matchups on Monday, Taylor Fritz upset fourth seed Alexander Zverev by mounting a comeback from two sets down to win 4-6, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3. The American was able to overcome the relentless serve of the German to set up a clash with Italian  Lorenzo Musetti later this week. Musetti went through Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-2  earlier in the day to book his place in the quarter finals.

On Sunday, top seed and world no. 1 Jannick Sinner beat American Ben Shelton in straight sets to make yet another quarter final in 2024. He will have a difficult test in the next round against 5th seeded Daniil Medvedev who has got the best of him on two occasions this year.

Carlos Alcaraz also made it into the final 8 with a win over Ugo Humbert despite having a rocky third set. His next opponent will be American Tommy Paul who has been playing some inspired tennis as of late and should give Alcaraz a run for his money.

If both Alcaraz and Sinner win their quarter final matches it will set up a blockbuster meeting between the two young stars in the semi finals.
